Rockefeller Emerald Set in Platinum Sold for $5.5 Million!

The Rockefeller Emerald, a legendary 18.04 cts. emerald that was bought by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1930 for his wife was sold this week at the Christie's Auction for estimated $5.5 Million by the legendary jewellery brand Harry Winston!
The Emerald was set in a platinum mount at the time of sale.
The Emerald commanded a price of USD 305,000 per carat and has become the most expensive emerald ever sold by per carat price, at a public auction!

History
It is believed that this beautiful emerald was first acquired by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1930 as the center piece of a brooch for his wife Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. When Mrs. Rockefeller died in 1948, their youngest son, David inherited the Emerald. He had the stone reset in a platinum ring setting from a master jeweller.
About a decade ago, an American Collector acquired this historic gem & it was finally auctioned at Christie's last week.

It is believed that the Emerald will be a part of the Harry Winston Museum being brought up in New York.
