Blue Diamonds, which derive their beautiful color from boron are many times rarer than white diamonds.
Petra Diamonds, the mining company that owns the Cullinan Mines in South Africa, have unearthed a huge 122.52 carats blue diamond rough (shown above). It is noteworthy to add that the Cullinan Mines have a special place in the world of diamonds having unearthed the biggest rough diamond ever, a 3,106 carats humongous diamond rough in 1905.
Update : September 17, 2014 The diamond rough has been sold for an estimated $27.5 Million!
Earlier another beautiful blue diamond rough that sold for 17 Million USD was also sourced from the Cullinan Mines, one of the most significant sources of blue diamonds. Cullinan Mines have produced more than 750 stones weighing more than 100 carats, 130 stones weighing more than 200 carats, and around a quarter of all diamonds weighing more than 400 carats.Heart of Eternity the famous blue diamond is also believed to have originated from the Cullinan Mines.
